Clear Films’ Documentary Film; Mothers of a Nation (cont.)
DE-CONSTRUKT was excited to take on this challenge and hired Sam Spetner, illustrator, graphic artist and world traveler. Fortunate for us, Sam was in New York City and was not in his normal places; San Francisco, Palestine, India or Africa. Sam spent a week mocking up designs, patiently hand crafting cut paper animation sequences of plants growing and woman turning into trees (see Concept #1 and Concept #2).
We were inspired by the imagery of the film in particular sequences, frozen in time, iconic woman posing with plants. We crafted mock animation sequences and made several drawings exploring how the color and patterns would work with the shapes.
We created the final stage of the animation with cut colored paper, a woman in African color dress who animates into a flame tree, with roots for feet. This imagery was then used for the film poster, business cards, and for the Mothers of a Nation web site.
